Ingredients
- 1 jar or can of fermented Sauerkraut
- 1 medium sized onion
- 2 strips of smoked bacon (leave it out for a vegetarian version)
- 1 vegetable stock cube
- vegetable oil (I always take olive oil)
- caraway seeds
- grated nutmeg
- parsley
Some people might think that the preparation of Sauerkraut was just heating up the content of a can. Let me prove these people wrong and try this way of preparing it
- cut the bacon into small slices
- chop up the onion into small pieces
- heat up some vegetable oil in a pot or high pan
- shallow fry the bacon and the onion
- now add the content of the jar with all the liquid into the pan
- add the vegetable stock cube, half a teaspoon of caraway seeds and a pinch of nutmeg
- shallow fry everything until it starts to stick to the pan, but don“t let it burn!
- add some water, continue to sizzle and let it sizzle adding water every once in a while to avoid burning and sticking, do this for at least 15 minutes
- sprinkle some parsley on top
- serve with some good quality bratwurst sausages and boiled or mashed potatoes
