How to make pâté chinois
This is a traditional French Canadian shepherd's pie. It's name translated means "Chinese pie," apparently it's got something to do with the Chinese railway workers way back when.
Chop the onion, then fry it until it turns soft. Add the beef to the pan and cook until lightly brown.
Boil the potatoes until they're soft, then mash them with a little milk and butter.
Layer the ingredients in a pan in the following order: steak, blé d'Inde, patates. Beef first, then corn, and potatoes last.
Sprinkle grated cheese and breadcrumbs on top if you like, then bake at 350F for about half an hour or until the top turns golden.
Note: This must absolutely be served with ketchup! It is not authentic pâté chinois without it.
