Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon of green cardamon seeds
- 2 inch cinnamon stick
- 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds (can be toasted)
- 1 teaspoon of whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon of whole black peppercorns
- 1/4 of whole nutmeg
I'm not too fond of the generic store bought garam masala, as freshly ground masala tastes much better! Here is my recipe for it:
- Simply put all the ingredients into a spice grinder or coffee grinder or use a mortar and pestle until the you get a fine powder
- Store in a dark and dry place in an airtight container
Yields about 1/4 cup of garam masala
Note: I had some questions and comments about the picture, and how it contains star anise. Its usually not an ingredient included in basic garam masala. As for the picture, its a stock image, not actually my own. I've mentioned before that I don't usually keep a camera in my kitchen lol. Sorry about the confusion! :)

rachel saysAwesome! Thanks for this. I've always wanted to know what exactly it was that went into Garam Masala. (Btw - I notice you have Star Anise in the picture but not in the ingredients list.. can this be added as well?)
