Garam Masala (Indian Spice Mix)

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of green cardamon seeds
  • 2 inch cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds (can be toasted)
  • 1 teaspoon of whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon of whole black peppercorns
  • 1/4 of whole nutmeg

I'm not too fond of the generic store bought garam masala, as freshly ground masala tastes much better! Here is my recipe for it:

  1. Simply put all the ingredients into a spice grinder or coffee grinder or use a mortar and pestle until the you get a fine powder
  2. Store in a dark and dry place in an airtight container

Yields about 1/4 cup of garam masala

Note: I had some questions and comments about the picture, and how it contains star anise. Its usually not an ingredient included in basic garam masala. As for the picture, its a stock image, not actually my own. I've mentioned before that I don't usually keep a camera in my kitchen lol. Sorry about the confusion! :)

    Awesome! Thanks for this. I've always wanted to know what exactly it was that went into Garam Masala. (Btw - I notice you have Star Anise in the picture but not in the ingredients list.. can this be added as well?)

    oh this is good to know! I have about a pound of cardamon and cinnamon, and some cumin seeds that I brought back from india.
